About

Welcome to Discovering Nature, a photo journal of outdoor experiences and observation in the northeastern U.S.

Back in 2011-12, I became interested in nature exploration and photography, so I created this space to keep a record of sorts. I’m a native to these parts, but only recently have my eyes been opened to the beauty and diversity of my region.

There are some resources and tools that have been really important in developing my family’s nature interests. (Links to these products are Amazon affiliate links, which means if someone buys a product through one of them I’ll earn a commission.) I’m indebted to Anna Botsford Comstock’s Handbook of Nature Study for helping me and my family get started on a journey of discovery that promises to be a lasting one.

As for camera equipment, most of the earlier pictures here were taken using a Canon EOS Rebel t3i with an EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens for wider-angle pictures and an EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM telephoto lens — all of which are discontinued now.

That camera stopped working well around 2017, and though it was replaced with a (very inferior) Rebel t6, my go-to camera changed to a Panasonic Lumix, a bridge camera that is lightweight and has some amazing features. These days, I’ve switched again to a Canon EOS RP, a full-frame mirrorless camera. In addition to the wide angle lens, for a telephoto I use a 100-400 lens.

I’ve blogged since 2007 at Across the Page, where I accumulated quite a few nature study posts before deciding to to create Discovering Nature. I welcome your thoughts and comments on the posts here. Thank you for stopping by, and come again soon!
